Sam Smith and his beginning as an artist
Sam Smith rose to fame in October 2012 when he put out “Latch”, which became his breakout single when it peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. By December 2013, he was nominated for and won both 2014 BBC’s Sound Poll and Brit Critic’s Choice Award.

A brief history of Sam Smith and how he started in Music?
Born in London on May 19, 1992, Sam Smith had weight loss issues during his childhood. He was bullied by his peers because he had “breasts” as a child, and even had to undergo the popular weight loss medical procedure “liposuction” at the age of 12. However, this did not stop Sam Smith from pursuing his passion for the arts. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Youth Music Theatre UK, and was even part of their 2007 production of “Oh! Carol”.
In 2014, Sam Smith came out as gay, and acknowledged a relationship – which had ended by then- with model and actor Jonathan Zeizel. He even dedicated his third album “The Thrill of It All” to “the gay man that he has become”. He describes himself as a feminist, and is today also known as an icon in the LGBTQ+ community.
Their Lifestyle and Weight Problem
Ever since his youth, Sam Smith has struggled with both body image and weight loss issues, and during his rise to fame, he has admitted that it used to cause him anxiety. He reported that he was “obsessed” with his body image, especially since his career would constantly put him in the public eye. He would constantly judge his appearance in the mirror, weigh himself, and even pinch his waist when looking at his reflection.
Sam Smith has also admitted, he would use food as both a means of comfort, and as an escape from the constant bullying and harassment that he would experience from his peers. He noted that his love for food was “toxic”, and that food “controlled” him. When compounded with his schedule as a musician, it started to take a toll on his weight, health and energy.
How They Lost Weight?
In 2015, Sam Smith made the decision to radically change his lifestyle and diet towards a healthier and happier one. In a now-deleted Instagram post, he credits the beginning of his journey with nutritionist Amelia Freer. He noted “I met a woman who has completely changed my life. Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone in 2 weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food”.
The bulk of his weight loss occurred in 2015, when Sam Smith dropped a staggering 50 pounds and amazed his fans, friends, and family. However, he still continues with his improved diet and exercise regimen until today. He still eats healthy, choosing to load up on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and lean proteins, while avoiding sugary treats and simple carbohydrates. He has also taken going to the gym three times a week, and works out with the help of a personal trainer. He reportedly focuses on specialized weight loss training and cardio in order to burn as many calories as possible.
